King and Prince Hotel is a hotel located on St. Simons Island in the U.S. state of Georgia.
History
The King and Prince Hotel was founded in 1935 as a seaside dance club by Frank Horn and Morgan Wynne, in defiance after being kicked out of the Cloister Hotel at Sea Island for drunkenness. The hotel is so named because the two men, one being tall and heavyset, and the other being short and skinny, were called "the king and the prince" when seen together. Six years later, in July 1941, the King and Prince Hotel's main building opened for the public. It was considered quite modern. After serving as a naval coast-watching and training facility during World War II, the island resort reopened its doors to the public in 1947. In 1972 and 1983 the resort underwent building renovations and expansions.
The King and Prince was the host of the 1957 Bilderberg meeting. The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort is a member of Historic Hotels of America in 1966, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
