Hosting 174 rooms, it also had such features as formal gardens with a fountain, a ballroom and 400-seat dining room. It was torn down in 1972 to make room for a new main United States Post Office and Distribution facility with a much smaller station for Amtrak service between the new Post Office and the railroad tracks.</p> <p></p> <h2><span id="History_and_design">History and design</span></h2><br><br> <p>The hotel was built only a year after the B&O completed its rail connection to Pittsburgh. This placed Cumberland at a major junction of the route northwest to Pittsburgh and the B&O main line west of the Ohio River. The building was designed by Thomas N. Heskett of the B&O Road Department in the Italianate style, and the construction cost was over $350,000. The hotel served as a summer resort, although the railroad did not actively promote it as a tourist destination. Located in a valley surrounded by mountains, it provided an escape from the summer heat.</p> <p>The year the hotel was finished, the B&O expanded its resort business by beginning the construction of the Deer Park Hotel in Garrett County. (The latter hotel closed in 1929 and was later destroyed by fire.)</p> <p>The B&O completed construction of a new, expanded passenger station component in 1912. Interest in and occupancy of the hotel also declined. The hotel closed to the public in December 1964. Following a fire in 1969, the building was inspected by the city and declared to be a hazard. The B&O made plans to demolish the hotel, and supporters of historic preservation attempted court action to save the building. These efforts were unsuccessful and the B&O began demolition of the building in 1971.</p> <p>The effort to preserve this ornate, Victorian-era structure was one of the classic preservation battles of the early 1970s. Gottlieb Storz built the Prague Hotel in 1898, as a three-story brick building that provided Nebraska's Czech immigrants with familiarities in their new country. It opened on June 1, 1898. In addition to a 25-room hotel, it included a restaurant and a tavern. A sign in the tavern window proclaimed in Czech, "<i>Pražská Pivnice, Dámy Jsou Vítány</i>", which translated to English meant "<i>Prague Hotel, Ladies Are Invited</i>". The tavern closed in 1942. For more than forty years it remained the only hotel catering to Bohemians between Chicago and the Pacific Coast.</p> <p>In 1987 the building was rehabilitated and converted into apartments. Whidden, later of the prominent Portland architectural firm Whidden & Lewis, and Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead, & White. The site was previously occupied by the Central School Building. To make way for the hotel, the school building was purchased by Philip A. Marquam, one of the hotel project's financial backers, who relocated it one block north (to where the Selling Building now stands).</p> <p>Railroad magnate Henry Villard financed the Portland Hotel and construction began in 1882, but his finances collapsedâ€"in part because of the Panic of 1884â€"and the construction stopped for five years. With only the foundation completed, the site became known as "Villard's Ruins" and the bodies of two murder victims were found there before construction resumed. George B. Markle, Jr. began a campaign to raise local money to complete the hotel. He generated enough interest and subscribers to his plan, among them Henry W. Corbett, Henry Failing, Simeon Reed and William S. Ladd, to get construction started again. Later investors included labor leader Ed Boyce.</p> <p>The Queen Anne, Châteauesque hotel finally opened in 1890 and had eight floors and 326 bedrooms. It had cost well over a million dollars and eight years to complete.</p> <p>The Portland Hotel stood between Southwest Morrison and Yamhill, on 6th Street (now called 6th Avenue), facing the Pioneer Courthouse. Purchased in 1944 by Julius Meier and Aaron Frank, the deteriorating structure was demolished in 1951 and replaced by a parking structure for the Meier & Frank Building. The final day of operation was August 15, 1951. All of the hotel's furnishings and fixtures were disposed of at a public auction on August 28â€"29, 1951, the iron scrollwork gates being sold to Eric Ladd, a local contractor and historic preservationist (no relation to William Ladd).</p> <p>When Pioneer Courthouse Square was built on the site in 1984, the iron scrollwork gate of the hotel was incorporated into the design. Much of the hotel's original stone foundation remains under the square's sidewalks.</p> <p>Eleven U.S. presidents stayed at the Hotel Portlandâ€"each time, a new set of Haviland China was purchased for the occasion.</p> <p>A. E. It was built in 1912 and designed by the office of architect George B. Post (1837â€"1913). It was originally a four story, "U" shaped structure; in 1955 a one story ballroom was added at the rear of the structure in the exterior courtyard. It features both Classical and Mission style details. The most distinctive interior feature is a 40-foot-diameter (12 m) rotunda centrally located on the main level.
